The latest wave

The excitement of surfing, sand and sun continues at the QS 10,000-rated Ballito Pro (presented by Billabong). Unfortunately South Africa has lost two of its best in the elimination of champion Jordy Smith and the talented Michael February.

Day 1 kicked off Monday 29 June at Bathers Beach in KwaDukuza.  Brent Dorrington (Australia) dominated heat 8, ranking highest for the day by claiming an impressive heat tally of 16.60. Tomas Fernandes (Portugal) was close behind and claimed the second highest score, which sees him through to the next round. The biggest upset was of course the resulting knock-out of South African favourite and World No. 18 Smith. He fell short behind Dorrington and Fernandes, needing 8.90 to progress to the next stage.

Maxime Huscenot (France) scored 12.10 to beat out February’s 8.63 tally in heat 10. The first shock results need not quell all hope because South Africa still has some fantastic promise in David Van Zyl (heat 14) and Dale Staples (heat 21). Van Zyl has already qualified, behind Marc Lacomare (France), and will feature in the round of 48.

All the day 2 action is still underway. Watch it live or stay updated here with us. Surf’s up!
