The Durban Sky Grand Prix of Aerobatics chooses KZN for first ever show

The Durban Sky Grand Prix of Aerobatics is making its debut on the beaches of Durban KwaZulu-Natal, on 21, 22 and 23 March 2014. The entertaining and exhilarating event brings together the world’s top aerobatic pilots in a “Six Nations” thrilling aerobatic challenge on Durban’s main beachfront. Ten South African aero aces will compete head to head with five world and national champions from France, Russia, USA, Great Britain and Germany while flying the most modern aerobatic aircraft, pitting pilot and plane against each other as they test the limits of G-force, skill and speed in the skies above Durban’s world class beaches.

The internationally recognised aerobatic event, sanctioned by the International Aero Sports Federation (FAI), International Aerobatic Commission (CIVA) and South African Aerobatics (SAC), is a first of its kind to take place in South Africa and will be judged by a world class judging panel with live commentary featuring instantaneous scoring and dramatic big screen coverage.

Organisers will keep the crowds entertained over 3 fun filled, adventure soaked days filling gaps between the grand prix flying with a show of land, sea and airborne entertainment that has never been seen in this format on Durban’s beaches before.

Perhaps the boldest statement from the organisers and sponsors of the Durban Sky Grand Prix of aerobatics is that the full 3 days of entertainment will be provide free to the public, tying into KZN Treasury’s commitment to take aviation to the people. “Kids, adults, families, aviation enthusiasts and beach lovers will all be able to watch this first of its kind event without having to buy a ticket – all that is needed is to arrive on Durban’s central beaches over the 3 days.”

Dr Clive Coetzee, General Manager: Infrastructure Management and Economic Services, says “This is going to be a great event for KZN and Durban. KZN Treasury has been focused on delivering on its vision to take aviation to the people and this event is the culmination of all the hard work we’ve put into the KZN Winter Air Tour and the Zululand Race of Champions – getting the team ready to host this world class beach event. We have taken aviation to the far reaches of the province and now we are bringing an extraordinary show to the country’s favourite beach right here in Durban.”

Apart from the exceptional flying the event will offer an interactive experience for visitors as parts of Durban’s North beach, Bay Gardens and the promenade are transformed into event zones where the public will be able to meet pilots, learn about aviation or be part of other fun activities to keep them entertained outdoors.

Vivienne Holden, Senior Events Manager for Durban City, adds “The City teams are working with the organisers and the Province in putting together all the logistics necessary to host another first of its kind event of this calibre in Durban. We look forward to welcoming the international participants and all the visitors to our beautiful city, and we are confident that this will be another exceptional and exciting event experience in Durban”
