On the 28 September 2013, over 45 malls across South Africa were abuzz as people brought in cupcakes to help celebrate National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer. Cupcakes bakers and cupcake eaters alike were enthusiastic as they rallied together for a common cause, raising over a million Rand for children struggling with cancer. In Ballito it was at our favourite centre, Lifestyle.
This charitable success would never have been possible if it weren’t for the volunteers, bakers, sponsors and co-ordinators.
The first time this event was held was in 2009 and raised R5 000, in 2011 the amount raised increased to R200 000. Last year’s National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer was held at 20 venues across the country and R507 000 was raised in one day. This year, the event raised a whooping R 1 121 352.80. This project has helped over 100 children during the past year and donations were made to 13 different charities in addition.
This year, more than 2000 bakers and 900 volunteers pulled through for the day. The money raised will make a huge difference in the lives of the families of this year’s Cupcakes for Kids with Cancer charity beneficiaries. The cupcakes leftover from the events at the malls were donated to different hospitals, orphanages, charities and old age homes in the surrounding communities.
“The highlight of my day was seeing that so many Cupcake Angels came together to create awareness for childhood cancer. Another highlight was seeing all the photos on Facebook and hearing the stories of the day. A funny story on Facebook was of a couple getting “locked up” in an old age home, while delivering cupcakes and sending messages to be “rescued”. It was lots of hard work, but it was all worth it in the end. Meeting the new volunteers and cupcake angels was also awesome!” said Sandy Cipriano, founder of Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer.
Thank you for making a difference and supporting this worthy cause, let us keep praying a cure for cancer is found in 2014.
