Fines Cancelled….if you save water

Simbithi Club house was packed to the brim, and then some, as people of Ballito voiced their frustration with the recently imposed fines. Some residents got hot under the collar but most adhered to the rules of engagement laid down by DOCCRA chairman, Dave Charles.

When presentations were all done by Sembcorp’s Shyam Misra, who covered most of the questions posed, Mayor Clr Welcome Mdabe spoke briefly and committed to cancel all fines imposed…on the condition that the people of Ballito meet the 50% reductions required. A strong incentive for us to actually embrace the real issue at hand – water is running out and by reducing consumption we can stretch the little we have.

Some highlights from the meeting were;

  • VAT can be charged on these fines. The fines are like interest or penalties by a private company. Sembcorp engage PWC on this issue.
  • While there was rain in Ballito there was no rain in the Greyville catchment area and so there has been no relief at Hazelmere Dam
  • Desalination will be implemented and the mayor is working on this project along with a handover of the project for raising the dam wall as well as desilting the dam. These projects will not improve inflows into the dam and water conservation is critical.
  • Window period for timeously lodging the appeal but you cannot not pay the fine. The appeal process is there to manage valid claims and is not an open method to not settle the bills sent.

It’s clear Ballito gets involved when it comes to having fines imposed on them. With the challenge thrown down to clear all fines let’s see if we can hit the targets to save water!
