With two weeks to go, the 8th Touch World Cup will kick off in Coffs Harbour, Australia from the 29th April to the 3rd May. The event is held every 4 years and will see around 25 nations contest several divisions across five days to take home the gold. South Africa have competed at this event regularly and currently hold 3rd place in the overall world rankings behind fellow rugby enthusiasts Australia and New Zealand. South Africa will compete in 3 of the available 9 divisions; Mens Open, Womens Open and Mixed Open with all teams on average playing 12 games each over the 5 days.
The 2015 World Cup is expected to be the biggest and most successful touch world cup event in its decorated, 26 year history. The World Cup is certainly the pinnacle and flagship event of the sports six-a-side game, and in order to get a scale and dimension of the event, it is estimated that up to 800 games will be played, close to 1500 participants will compete along with significant domestic and international media coverage.
Unfortunately as Touch isn’t one of the major sports in South Africa, the tour is entirely self-funded by the individual players. With no official sponsors on board, despite being recognised by SARU, the total cost each player has been required to pay has amounted to approx. R65K. To help ease some of the costs, individual players and selected groups have being hosting various fundraisers across the country to assist with their World Cup campaign.
Jess Fry has been fortunate enough to gain support from the local Ballito Dolphins Rugby Club, who have decided to host a fundraising evening at La Piazza on Wednesday the 22nd of April from 6pm. Tickets for the evening are R150pp and include bottomless pizza and a glass of wine. R70 of the ticket cost will be donated towards her tour costs. In addition, there will be an auction taking place along with a raffle (1st prize is 2 x nights for 2ppl in a Sea view Suite at the Fairmont Zimbali Resort), to assist with raising funds. Tickets for the raffle are R50 and people wishing to attend are encouraged to book & pay with La Piazza directly (0325863565/ 0329461529).
