Ballito stands against EFF

Ballito residents are rallying together to stop what looks like an imminent ‘land grab’ by the Economic Freedom Fighters.

A group of about 60 EFF members, most wearing the party’s trademark red, arrived in Ballito yesterday afternoon and started building a shack near the eBandla Hotel. The EFF members are currently at the intersection to the N2 freeway, gathering in numbers.

Yesterday the group’s leader insisted that the land, which is privately owned, had been stolen by Jan van Rebeeck and rightfully belonged to them. Residents have rubbished that claim and vowed to stand against the building of an informal settlement.

Following yesterday’s activity a community group has been set up to keep residents in the loop – the news of the land grab sent Ballito into a frenzy.

The group, administered by Gavin Higgins, gave an update this morning saying a shack had been built during the night. However, the shack was taken down less than an hour ago, following a directive from EFF leadership for their members to vacate the land.

The party is holding a press conference later today.

Land owners are seeking a court interdict against the invasion.
