Runners who have still not qualified for the upcoming Comrades Marathon, still have one major opportunity to do so – through the inaugural KZN Deloitte Challenge, a significant new entry on the province’s running calendar which will be run on Friday, 1 May 2015, the Workers’ Day public holiday. And, good news for cyclists is the fact that they haven’t been overlooked.
In addition to being a new event, the Deloitte Challenge will also offer cyclists the opportunity to enjoy the seaside and flat terrain of the north coast. For those running the full 42.2km Comrades qualifier Marathon, the starting point will be the Lifestyle Centre in Ballito and the start for the 40km Cycle Race will be adjacent to Ashton International College. The 21.1km Half Marathon will start at the Sibaya Casino near Umdloti. “The finishing point for all the Deloitte Challenge events will be Growthpoint Kings Park Stadium in Durban,” says Guy Brazier, Office Managing Partner of Deloitte in KwaZulu-Natal.
“We have also catered for all members of the family who wish to be able to take part in the Deloitte Challenge by hosting a 5km Fun Run which will take place along the beachfront promenade, starting and finishing at the Stadium.”
“The inclusion of a 40km ride for cyclists makes the event unique, with the Deloitte Challenge being the only KZN event offering the opportunity for riders to use the same route ahead of a Marathon. We are conscious of the danger that traffic poses to cyclists and as a result, we have been afforded road closure of the M4 northbound carriage way to traffic on the day of the event between Ballito and Durban. We are also aware that heat and humidity at the coast can be a major concern for runners and cyclists, and so we have selected May 1 because of the more temperate climate experienced at this time of year.” The closing date for early entries is 10 April 2015.
In addition to their entry fee, participants for the Deloitte Challenge are invited to donate to LIV Village in KZN, the preferred beneificiary of Deloitte. “LIV is home to abandoned and orphaned children who are given a chance to flourish in a homely environment where their needs are catered for by housemothers. It is a special place in our Province” adds Brazier.
“Deloitte sees its sponsorship of the event from several perspectives, says Brazier.’ “We are deeply involved with projects connected with the development and expansion of the KZN economy and see our sponsorship of the event as a way to emphasise our commitment to the Province. The choice of the route for the challenge along what is KZN’s Northern Growth Corridor was designed to underscore the importance of this area to the people of KZN and Deloitte as well as to highlight its potential as a tourist destination”.
“As responsible corporate citizens we have long supported the LIV Village and saw the Challenge as a means of creating awareness about this organisation with a broader audience. Finally, we believe that health and exercise should involve all members of the family and our clients, hence the reason for it being a multi-faceted event, with plans to add an MTB component and some sea events in future years”
“We believe the event will become a ‘must do’ Challenge for not only local runners, but also those from further afield looking for a run or cycle that is stimulating, stretches runners and cyclists alike and offers a flat sea level course with unmatched scenery of the north coast of KZN.”
