Principals and teachers from five rural KwaDukuza schools were rewarded for their enthusiasm and dedication in the classroom at the recent RedCap Schools Incentives Awards Ceremony at Umhlali Preparatory School on October 31.
Started in 2011 the RedCap Incentives Awards rewards educators from five RedCap Primary Schools in KwaDukuza, KwaZulu-Natal, for reaching their targets to improve education. The primary schools are part of the MRP Foundation’s RedCap Schools Programme, a holistic education programme focused on improving literacy and numeracy through educator development as well as integrating arts, dance, drama and music classes along with sports programmes.
All elements of the RedCap Schools Programme are evaluated for their performance: the JET education categories which includes teacher and learner development; Principal mentorship; the YoungHeroes sports programme; the TechEd computer project; WESSA’s Eco Schools and the arts, dance, drama and music programme Iciko.
The awards underlines the success of the programme with 95% teacher attendance and a 85% learner attendance as well as each of the five RedCap Schools acquiring higher English and maths marks than district, provincial and national average – an incredible achievement! Prizes varied from MRP and SPAR gift vouchers to school trophies, books and apparel.
The annual awards were hosted in the halls of the established education institution Umhlali Preparatory School, and as well as being an indicator that education standards in rural schools are improving are helping to create an inspired and more prepared generation of school leavers.
