PMB Airshow set to be best in 3 years

It is that time again when the KZN Winter Air Tour will land at the Pietermaritzburg airport on 7 June 2014. The third year in a row for Pietermaritzburg taking part in the KZN Winter Air Tour, and it will again be nothing short of spectacular. A recent upgrade to the airport aligned with stimulating interest in aviation sees the Tour living up to its motto and truly, “Taking aviation to the people.”

The Airshow is open to the public and offers world-class entertainment in a day of piloted performances from around the country. Mark Saturday 7 June on your calendar because you do not want to miss out on this fun family day. So get your picnic blankets ready and find your seats to be enthralled as the sky comes alive with incredible displays of aircraft aerobatics, parachute performances and jet planes. Hosted in partnership with the Msunduzi Municipality, the community at large is gearing for the day, which benefits business and locals alike.

Dr Clive Coetzee, General Manager of Infrastructure Management and Economic Services at the KZN Provincial Treasury said, “We hope to see thousands from Maritzburg there who I am sure are as excited about the show as we are. The Treasury is very encouraged by the support provided by the municipality.” Coetzee expressed his added enthusiasm for the Tour incorporating a development programme whereby it is not just entertainment. “The airshow is a platform for young people to learn about the world of aviation and to showcase the newly renovated Maritzburg airport,” Coetzee concluded. Director of the Msunduzi Innovation and Development Institute (Midi), Rob Fincham shared in the looming excitement and said, “There certainly seems to be a great deal of energy for the Tour, personally I am excited and it looks like it will be a bumper occasion.”

The KZN Winter Air Tour puts aviation in the spotlight in Pietermaritzburg and encourages the youth in new and exciting career possibilities. It also highlights local businesses and opportunities. The Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business CEO Melanie Veness said, “The Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business is pleased that the city will enjoy another Pietermaritzburg Airshow, as part of the KZN Winter Air Tour. Pietermaritzburg is a capital city, so it is very much a business center, and from a tourism perspective, there is no doubt that it is an events city. The airshow adds an exciting element to our already enviable calendar of events and it highlights the strategic importance of the Pietermaritzburg Airport, which plays a critical role in facilitating economic development in the region.”

An impressive lineup at this years Airhshow includes the impressive Impala jet plane that crowds adore. The P52 Mustang, MX2, incredible aerobatics, Chipmunk and Yak formations and stunning displays. On the waiting list are the South African Air Forces Silver Falcons.

The show begins around 10am, it will break for lunch between 12 and 1pm where the public will be able to walk about the aircraft and get an up-close experience with most of the aircraft, and the show will finish around 3.30pm. Vendors will offer food drink and sundry for cash only purchase throughout the day. Ticket cost is only R50 for adults and R30 for kids, less than a movie ticket for a whole day. Before the show begins a development programme will take place for the local youth.
