In a departure from our usual interview with a local businessperson, this month we profile and pay tribute to three people in Ballito who, we believe, have stood out and made a difference in the past year. All three of our profiled stars exude their own sort of magic and energy, which at this time of the year is synonymous with the Christmas spirit and the joys of the festive season.
Dubs Heydenrych – Selfless Star
What does your daily job entail?
At the moment I’m looking after the day-to-day running of the new Linc Church building project.
What would you say has been your greatest achievement this year?
I’m a bit of sucker for infrastructure because it is an investment in the bigger picture, so it has to be the road from Sage to the end of Foxhill. So many lives will be transformed and a town can be changed by such simple projects.
What are you passionate about?
I’m most passionate about my local church, it’s an irresistible community with a global expression!
Best advice you’ve ever been given?
Not to take criticism from those who are sitting in the stands and are not in the arena.
What does your community mean to you and in what way do you give back to it?
I love the North Coast and have entrenched myself in this community during the last 12 years. I’m on the leadership team of the most awesome church, called Linc, and I’m on the board of an exciting new initiative, called Hearts that Hope, which is a great children’s home. You can check it out at heartsthathope.com
What inspires you?
I’m inspired by pockets of excellence, so anyone doing anything really well inspires me! And fun man, if I’m not having fun, I feel as if I’m having the life sucked out of me.
How do you unwind in this amazing place called Ballito?
I have the most amazing wife and two radical little boys and, as anyone who has young kids knows, they need space. So the beach is always a winner.
“If you live for the praise of man, you’ll die by their criticism as well!”
