With over 70 gyms across the country and The United We Stand Games having experienced 65% more entries than last year CrossFit is, without doubt, on the rise in South Africa.
This year’s biggest community CrossFit event in Africa has officially concluded and, once again, The United We Stand Games have proven to be a resounding success. Nearly 600 CrossFitters together with local celebrities, a jam-packed itinerary and the estimated 10 000 strong crowd over the 3 days all worked together to ensure an awesome event, one that global fitness brand Reebok is extremely proud to be associated with. The event, which was hosted by Reebok CrossFit Durbs from 25th – 27th October 2013, saw Gateway Theatre of Shopping erupt with excitement as 95 teams battled it out for the championship title.
Steve Young, Reebok Communication Manager explains, “The competition amongst these athletes was a true display of endurance, strength, energy and unwavering perseverance. As a brand on a crusade to inspire people to be fit for life, the success of the event helps drive us one step closer to our goal. The overwhelming presence of Reebok CrossFit product proudly worn by the community is a clear indicator that Reebok and CrossFitters are authentically aligned in values of fitness.”
He continues, “The United We Stand Games was initially launched by Reebok CrossFit Durbs with the sole purpose of bringing together the CrossFit boxes from across the country, ultimately highlighting the fact that the community is what CrossFit is all about. The enthusiasm and camaraderie witnessed throughout the weekend proves that we have achieved our objective”.
The competition delivered the kind of workouts that are commonly recognized in the CrossFit community – constantly varied, high intensity movements under heavy loads. After the gruelling 3 day competition team PBM 1 from CrossFit PBM achieved first place, with team Progenex Virtuosos from CrossFit Platinum and team Iron Angle from Iron Angel CrossFit Ballito placing 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Having being crowned United We Stand champions, Team PBM 1 walked away with the latest Reebok gear valued at R50, 000.00.
“Congratulation Team PBM 1 – the competition proved to be a true test of fitness and your title is well deserved,” says Young.
To add to the excitement of the event, for the first time ever MTV Choice recorded their extremely popular ‘Top 10 Chart Countdown’ show from the United We Stand arena, incorporating the hype and energy of the weekend into one of South Africa’s trendiest entertainment shows. MTV Choice hosts Roxy Burger and Sade Giliberti also participated in an Exhibition WOD (Workout of the Day) which was captained by popular East Coast Radio DJ Damon Beard. The team, which also included lead singer of top South African band Lonehill Estate Jonathan Ross, East Coast Radio’s sports guy Mak Dlamini and TV presenter Stacey Holland, competed against 3 other CrossFit teams in a workout designed to test their limits.
“The celebrities showed great determination and spirit, and really gave of their best during the feisty Exhibition WOD. Well done to the dream team for putting in such a wonderful effort,” says Young.
He ends, “It certainly was a competition filled with an abundance of excitement, energy, fun and a whole lot of fitness. The phenomenal support shown from both fitness enthusiasts and spectators at events such as The United We Stand Games confirms that CrossFit in South Africa is growing in stature – which is extremely exciting for Reebok to see”.
