Two of Ashton’s swimmers have made waves at the Level 3 Nationals being held at Kings Park Swimming Pool in Durban. The 5-day National event started on Friday evening, with top swimmers from across the country participating in the Championships.
Cameron Pennell was the first to clinch a silver medal, by taking second place in the 100m backstroke final with a time of 105.50 behind the first swimmer in a time of 105.33, in the 13 year category. Sunday saw three more podium finishes for Ashton, with Cameron claiming a bronze in the 100m (13 year) and Demi Jefferys finishing 2nd in the 50m butterfly event for girls 14 years and bronze in the 100m freestyle event.
Two other swimmers who faired exceptionally well were Amber Smith (5th in 100m freestyle – girls 13 years) and Tyler Mirtle (5th in 100m freestyle – girls 16 years). The Level 3 Nationals end on Tuesday. Level 2 Nationals will be held in Kimberley from 22 – 25 March with nine swimmers from Ashton competing. All eyes will be on Zoë Frank who has broken two South African records in the past two months.
Six youngsters will travel to Newcastle to participate in the Level 1 Nationals, with Sarah-Jane Walker and Amber Smith swimming at the Youth Nationals in April at Kings Park.
