Profile Friday : Meet Gillian von Buddenbrock

Tell us a little about yourself

Born and bred in KZN (Pmb and Durbs), my husband and I got married in 98 and moved to the UK where we spent 6½ years.  We had our 2 daughters (now 6 and 8) in Bristol and returned back to SA towards the end of 2006, deciding to settle in Ballito – it was a great decision – we  have since had our son who is now 4.   I love people, movies, socialising, running and mountain biking.  I enjoy chaos – the crazier it gets the happier I am!!

What do you do for a living?

I have been in the recruitment industry for the past 12 years, placing mainly high level finance professionals.  The recruitment game has changed considerably in the last 3 years and even more so in the past year – it’s a tough game so although I still work on a couple of senior level placements, I am now writing recruitment blogs and helping with the company’s social media on a part time basis.  My true love and passion is my ever-growing baby – Sugar Rush Adventures – I started it 3 years ago when I realised there was a need for a website for the North Coast.  This has grown into many other areas – our expertise are in Marketing and PR so we offer our advertisers a bit more in the sense that we offer outsourced marketing for small businesses for an affordable monthly retainer.   I also run a Cycling Academy at Holla Trails for children where we teach them all about mountain biking in a fun and safe environment.

How long have you stayed/worked in Ballito?

I have been living here for nearly 6 years – my Aunt & Uncle have a farm in Umhlali and a cottage on Salt Rock main beach so my family have been coming out here since forever so this really is home to me!

What would be your favorite place to have a good meal in Ballito?

Probably have to say Mozambik, especially now that they are offering the Trinchada as a main meal!!!

Best place for sun-downers in Ballito, on a Friday afternoon, after a hectic week?

The Beach!!!  We have a WhatsApp group set up and we decide which beach we’ll hit on a Friday afternoon…it’s great for the kids and it’s relaxing – otherwise Sage is always a favourite!!

Your top 3 venues or places in and around Ballito?

Holla Trails – my sanity, Sage – love the vibe and Gianni’s – love the view

Name 3 places where you would take an international guest or out of town friend in South Africa?

It would have to be Cape Town, Kruger Park and the Berg

What is your best spot to get away from it all less than 2 hours away from home?

Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Game Reserve

If you could have any 3 people around for a splash-out meal at your home, who would you invite ?

3 special friends Clare, Lucy and  Les but I generally have more than that if I have a dinner party…
