Barry Bowditch, 60, was born in Johannesburg in the good old Transvaal, he has been living in Ballito for the past 18 years and loves the relaxed coastal lifestyle here. He’s married to Denise, who is the love of his life. Barry has four Daughters, Nine Grandchildren (sadly most living abroad) and two SPCA specials- Sasha and Sandy (Mom and Daughter).
We asked Barry a few question to get to know him and what he does a little bit better.
What do you do for a living? If you run a business tell us a little about it. I am a Professional photographer and started my business Bowditch Photography some four years ago after a lifetime passion for the art. I specialize in wedding Photography though my first love is Landscape and Wildlife.
Tell us something we may not know about you. Your biggest fear/ An exciting hobby/something interesting or the most interesting photo you’ve ever taken. I am an ex long distance runner with 6 Comrades and over 80 standard and ultra marathons’ under the belt.
What’s the most interesting photo you’ve ever taken? If you ask my wife she would probably say that I think my last one of the day is, but seriously a photograph of three bull elephants in profile taken in Jongomero Tanzania which has not only won me awards, but has a special place in my heart as it was taken in one of the remotest places on earth, of a breeding herd only seen by a handful of humans, in the company of one of my best friends, Jeffrey Blumberg, another award winning, and passionate wildlife photographer.
What is your best place to get away from it all less than 2 hours away from home? Can I stretch it to 2.5 hrs? Ok then for me it has to be Hluhluwe/ Imfolozi game reserve. I am a wildlife and outdoor nut!
Favorite place to have a good meal on the North Coast? It has to be John Dory’s there is no better value for money restaurant on the Dolphin Coast.
Your top 3 places on the KZN North Coast. These could be a restaurant, accommodation, hobby etc? Lifestyle centre there is so much to choose from, and with the new extensions even more so ( remember when we moved into Ballito in 1993, if you needed anything more than bread or milk it was off to Stanger or Durban). The pottery, Good breakfasts’ in a country setting on our doorstep. St Lucia for that being a million miles away from home feeling.”
Name 3 places where you would take an international guest or out of town friend in South Africa? Pafuri Game reserve in the Northern sector of The Kruger no other place like it. The Garden Route which just has it all, and The Drakensberg, in particular the Cavern near the Amphitheatre.
If you could have 3 people around for a splash-out meal at your home, who would you invite? Madiba, David Bullard and the Cartoonist Shapiro… Think about it!
If you had half an hour with Madiba, what would you talk about? (Why I was not chosen as his official photographer) jokes aside half an hour with Madiba is just too short, I would want him to do all the talking. One needs to shut up a little whist in the company of such an Icon, and just before the end of our time together I would try and punt for another session, and then ask him all about his most favourite moments in a very colourful life.
