Are you giving presents or presence this year?
Tomorrow is the 1st December, just in case you hadn’t already noticed or felt the pressure of having to get Christmas shopping done. With 25 days to go you have to find yourself asking how Christmas is going to make you feel this year. Will you feel the pressure of having to buy bigger and better presents and the stress of having to spend more to try out do what you did last year…or years before?
A group called Advent Conspiracy have been working on changing perceptions around Christmas and how we approach it. The story of Christ’s birth is a story of promise, hope, and a revolutionary love and they ask, “So, what happened?” What was once a time to celebrate the birth of a savior has somehow turned into a season of stress, traffic jams, and shopping lists.
And when it’s all over, many of us are left with presents to return, looming debt that will take months to pay off, and this empty feeling of missed purpose. Is this what we really want out of Christmas? What if Christmas became a world-changing event again?
If anything, the video below and the question above should get you thinking about what present is worthy of giving and shows real love for those we wish to share gifts with. Presence, giving of yourself, no matter how you do it, is a gift you could give that may change a life or create a memory that will never be forgotten….
What have we got to loose when we consider giving something a little different this year….giving presence.
